Not many B-24s served with four RAAF units. After flying with 7 O.T.U., 25 Squadron, 24 Squadron and finally 21 Squadron, A72-92 was shot down by flack over Tomohon in the Celebes on 27th of July 1945. Seven of F/L K.J. Hanson's crew went down with the aircraft. Here she bears her Training Unit markings. show photo

B-24 A72-84 of 23 Squadron, RAAF, 1945. This aircraft was named 'Cock o' the North' and the nose art, which can just be made out, shows a cockerel riding a bomb. The aircraft was piloted by Roger Court and it was his son Peter Court who spotted a downed American Liberator in the Ramu Valley, New Guinea. The wing and tailplane were salvaged off this aircraft and are now on our aircraft at Werribee.show photo

In November 1945 A72-359 was transporting seven crew and 28 nurses back to Melbourne. It refuelled at Darwin but a nosewheel tyre burst on take-off, breaking the nose gear. The starboard main wheel also collapsed and the aircraft caught fire, carrying 12,000 litres of petrol. Amazingly, everyone scrambled out unhurt exept for one nurse who received burns on her arms.
